What Is Bassoon?
Were you in the school band as a kid? Is your son or daughter looking for the right instrument to play this year? You may want to consider a unique instrument like the bassoon for your child; this instrument takes discipline to learn to play, but it a great asset to any band, symphony, or quartet.
The bassoon is a woodwind instrument, and is in the double reed family. The instrument usually plays music that is written for the tenor and bass registers, but on some occasions, the bassoon can play music that is written for a ‘higher’ instrument. Bassoon players are usually parts of orchestras, but this musical instrument is also a great addition to a band or group that plays chamber music, or jazz quartets. This instrument was originally used to reinforce the bass line of a band or orchestra. In groups that have double reed instruments, the bassoon is also used for the bass sound, and compliments the oboe and taille well.
Even though this is one of the instruments that is used in classical music, many modern musicians appreciate the sound of the bassoon as well. The instrument was used in the song ‘Tears of a Clown’ by Smokey Robinson, as well as in ‘59th Street Bridge Song’ by Harpers Bizarre. The bassoon became particularly popular in the 1800s, and many people have compared the sound of the instrument to the dark, smooth tone of the male baritone singing voice. The dulcian is considered to be the forerunner of the modern bassoon, since the two instruments are very similar; they both have a double reed that is fitted to a metal crook, there are tone holes, and a conical bore for the dark sound. The dulcian came in more forms than the bassoon, however, as there were soprano versions of this instrument as well. The dulcian was also the precursor to the ‘recorder’, which is an instrument that many smaller children learn to play before they are old enough to join the school band.
Today, the modern bassoon is available in two main forms, the Buffet system ad the Heckel system. Most of the musicians in the world play the Heckel system, but the Buffet system is played in Belgium, France, and parts of Latin America. The Heckel system was originated in Germany, ad the Buffet system started in France. These are two of the most popular places for classical music, and a number of great composers come from this part of the world.
